Mel Atkey has been a valued supporter of NMN almost since we started, and having heard him speak at a recent conference on new musical theatre in Wolverhampton, we can vouch for the fact that he is an engaging and knowledgable speaker.
Mel has written a fascinating book about the history of musical theatre, which reveals quite a number of surprising facts about the art form we all think we know the background of! It’s called A Million Miles From Broadway, and is well worth a read. If any of you have links with university or college drama departments, this would be a volume worth recommending they get hold of for their library or reading list. Website links for more information and how to purchase can be found at the end of this article.
Mel is clearly a man on a mission, and will shortly be embarking on a new undertaking at Goldsmiths’ College in London. He writes:
“I would like to further explain some of my future hopes and ambitions. Beginning in September, I will be embarking on a Masters Degree in musical theatre at Goldsmiths University of London. This will help me in my work as a musical theatre writer, and will also enable me to teach at a university level. Once I have that, I would like to offer my services as a guest lecturer and workshop facilitator at the international level. I have already put out some feelers in places like Singapore to assist with local musical writers in the work-shopping of new shows.”
New Musicals Network would like to wish Mel every success for his future plans.
